Thirty people sustained injuries in a collision between a tram and a city bus in Dresden on Tuesday. The fire department in Saxony's state capital confirmed that five of the injured were transported to hospitals for further treatment. The remaining victims suffered minor injuries and received on-site medical care.
Both vehicle operators were among those injured in the incident. In addition to medical treatment, they received psychological counseling to help them cope with the traumatic event.
According to authorities, the tram and bus collided Tuesday morning in the Cotta district for reasons that remain unclear. The force of the impact caused the tram to derail while navigating a curve, jumping off its tracks. Multiple passengers in both the bus and tram were thrown about by the collision.
Emergency services responded with a major deployment to the scene. The fire department alone dispatched 90 personnel to handle the incident. Specialized equipment, including hydraulic lifting devices and a shifting bridge, was brought in to lift the derailed tram and return it to its track bed. The accident resulted in road closures lasting several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the circumstances of the collision.
