An explosion involving a suspected explosive device outside an apartment block in Berlin damaged the building's facade as well as several parked cars. There were no injuries in the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in the Wedding district, as police in the capital announced.
The background to the attack was initially unclear; the investigation was taken over by the so-called BAO Ferrum, which was established in autumn following a series of firearms incidents and extortion cases.
According to police, the explosive device was suspected to be a grenade, though no further details were given. According to the findings of the investigation so far, one or more suspects made their way to the residential building at around 2 a.m. and detonated the device. The window of a nearby shop was also damaged in the blast, among other things.
The so-called BAO Ferrum of the Berlin police was established due to an accumulation of incidents in which criminals used firearms in the context of extortion crimes. It began its work in November. Since then, according to information released on Monday, the unit has among other things secured 54 arrest warrants and confiscated 52 live firearms.
