In North Rhine-Westphalia, a regional express train crashed into concrete slabs that had been placed on the tracks by unknown individuals. The 309 passengers and the train driver were unharmed, according to a statement released by the Dortmund police on Sunday.
However, the train was unable to continue its journey. It was en route from Aachen to Hamm on Saturday night, as the police explained. Near Kamen, the train driver suddenly saw objects on the tracks. He initiated an emergency brake, but the train collided with the concrete slabs. It had to be evacuated, and the passengers continued their journey on a replacement train.
Initial investigations revealed that several concrete slabs and a metal rod had been placed on the tracks. The slabs had previously been stolen from a cable shaft next to the railway line, police explained.
They initiated criminal proceedings for dangerous interference with rail traffic. A political motive cannot be ruled out, which is why state security is investigating. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
