A tragic incident at one of the Harz region's most visited landmarks has left three people dead after a fall from the Harz tower (Harzturm) in Torfhaus, a district of the municipality of Altenau in Lower Saxony. Police confirmed that two adults and their child died in the fall, in an incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon, with the fall taking place from the 65-metre-high structure.
Emergency services were alerted at around 4:45 p.m., prompting a large-scale response involving fire crews, paramedics, and police. Firefighters cordoned off the site and set up privacy screens to shield the area from onlookers. The district's crisis intervention team was also deployed to support relatives and witnesses affected by the tragedy. The "Goslarsche Zeitung" and NDR reported on the incident.
Police stated that the incident had a suicidal background. According to current reporting, authorities said that based on their investigation so far, no third-party negligence is suspected, while the broader circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain subject to further inquiry.
The Harzturm is a 65-metre-high observation tower in the Upper Harz, and according to its operators, it is the tallest German observation tower built with a wood-and-steel construction. The roughly ten-million-euro structure, which received around 1.4 million euros in funding from the state and federal government, features two observation platforms and a glass-floored skywalk situated 45 metres above ground.
The tower's completion had been delayed several times, reportedly due to the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the resulting energy crisis. Construction officially began in May 2021, and the tower was formally inaugurated on November 1, 2024, by Lower Saxony's then State Premier Stephan Weil. All areas of the attraction only became fully accessible to the public at a later date.
News of the deaths triggered widespread shock across the region, and in response to the tragedy, the tower's operators announced that the attraction would remain closed throughout the day on Friday. Police have not released further details regarding the identities of the victims, and the investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the fall continues, with authorities giving no indication of when additional information might be made public.
