A man stabbed his wife to death in the street in Kelkheim, Hesse. He attacked her on Tuesday evening, police in Wiesbaden announced on Wednesday. The woman died at the scene. The attacker was overpowered and held down by witnesses until police arrived, authorities said. The suspect was injured during his arrest.
As the Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor's office later announced, both the alleged perpetrator and his wife were Croatian nationals. An arrest warrant has been issued against the man, and he is currently in pre-trial detention. He inflicted at least 30 stab and cut wounds on his wife with a machete.
The couple had reportedly been married since 1991 but had lived separately for about three years. The man is said to have repeatedly threatened to kill his wife if she filed for divorce. The woman, however, had declined offers of help.
