A man died in Baden-Württemberg after being shot by a police weapon. Officials had previously been alerted because the 44-year-old man was shooting indiscriminately from the upper floor of his house in Leonberg on Saturday at the street, the building opposite, and passersby, the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation and the Stuttgart Public Prosecutor's Office announced Saturday evening.
The man also reportedly fired shots at the arriving police officers. No one was injured. The 44-year-old reportedly refused to contact the police. He then allegedly threatened officers from a special task force with a firearm upon entering the apartment. A police weapon was then fired, and the 44-year-old died at the scene.
It subsequently emerged that the weapon found in the man's apartment was an air gun. Whether he fired this or another weapon from the house is the subject of an investigation by the State Criminal Police Office.
Further incidents occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein. On Saturday night, a man was critically injured by the use of police weapons during an operation in Mülheim an der Ruhr. He was treated in a hospital. The man had previously been involved in a chase with officers from Bottrop. The motive was initially unclear. The Dortmund Police Headquarters and the Duisburg Public Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
In Harrislee, Schleswig-Holstein, a man was also injured in the upper body by a police gunshot on Saturday. The 23-year-old was taken to a hospital, according to police and the public prosecutor's office in Flensburg. The man was wanted in connection with a police operation. When officers encountered the man, he attacked the police officers, prompting one of them to fire a shot. The exact sequence of events is part of the investigation.
