Hours-long security crisis continues to grip the small town of Sinzig in the Ahrweiler district, where law enforcement has launched a major operation in response to a hostage situation at a Volksbank branch. The incident, which began Friday morning, involves multiple suspects holding several people captive inside the centrally-located bank.
One of the hostages is the driver of a cash transport vehicle, police in Koblenz confirmed Friday morning. Numerous emergency personnel have been deployed to the scene. The area surrounding the bank in the city center has been extensively cordoned off by police. "There is no danger to citizens outside the cordoned-off areas," authorities stated.
According to the tabloid newspaper "Bild," an armored money delivery vehicle pulled up to the bank in the morning. As a member of the transport crew exited to enter the building, an individual confronted and threatened him. "Currently, it is assumed that there are multiple perpetrators and hostages in the bank," police said Friday morning.
Law enforcement has established a large perimeter around the affected area as the situation continues to develop. Emergency services remain on high alert as they work to resolve the crisis.
People within the restricted zone were advised to remain inside their homes, a spokesperson for the Koblenz Police Headquarters told SWR. For those outside the cordoned area, there is generally no danger, and normal daily life can continue. The spokesperson did not disclose the exact number of suspected perpetrators or hostages, citing tactical reasons. “We have to wait and see how the situation develops over the next minutes or hours,” he said.
Police also urged the public not to spread unverified information on social media. Sinzig is a small town with around 17,000 residents in the Ahrweiler district. It is located along the Rhine in northern Rhineland-Palatinate, between Koblenz and Bonn.
