A 62-year-old man threatened to detonate an alleged hand grenade during an argument at a restaurant in Bielefeld on Sunday and was later shot by police officers during the ensuing operation. According to police in the North Rhine-Westphalian city, officers fired at least one shot at the man’s legs, leaving him seriously injured.
Police reported that the man was shot outside the restaurant, which he had already left by that time. He was known to authorities. During a search, officers found a knife, a bottle of vodka, and the suspected grenade on him. It was initially unclear whether the grenade was real. Bomb disposal experts were called to examine the device, and the area was cordoned off.
According to police, the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the Sennestadt district. Initial findings suggest that the man entered the restaurant, where a dispute broke out. He then displayed the alleged hand grenade and threatened to detonate it.
He later left the establishment but was encountered nearby by responding officers. Police said he did not cooperate. During the operation, officers fired a warning shot and at least one shot at his legs, according to current information.
