Freezing rain brought Berlin Airport BER to an abrupt halt on Thursday evening, stopping all departures and landings from 7:30 p.m. The icy conditions led to several dozen cancellations and followed earlier snowfall that had already disrupted operations. Airport officials say it remains uncertain when flights will be able to resume.

Operations at Berlin Airport BER largely came to a halt on Thursday evening because of the icy winter weather. Since 7:30 p.m., no flights have taken off or landed, a spokesperson for the airport told AFP. “Airport operations are essentially shut down, it is slick as glass,” she said.

By that point, “several dozen” flights had already been canceled, another BER spokesperson told AFP. The airport can cope with snow and ice, she said, but freezing rain in the evening is particularly dangerous. It remained unclear whether operations could resume on Friday, she added.

Already on Thursday morning, snow and freezing rain had severely disrupted operations at the airport. Aircraft were unable to take off because they could not be de-iced due to rapidly freezing rain. Landings were initially still possible, but were later suspended as well.
