Berlin’s main airport, Berlin-Brandenburg (BER), will soon be much easier and faster to reach by train. With the upcoming Deutsche Bahn timetable change in December, travelers can look forward to improved services, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB).
One of the key upgrades is the Flughafenexpress (FEX), the dedicated airport express train from Berlin Central Station. Currently, the FEX runs every 30 minutes during the day and takes about 39 minutes to reach BER, since it follows a longer route via Gesundbrunnen and Ostkreuz. This detour was necessary due to limited track capacity on the faster line.
Starting December 14, the situation will change dramatically. The FEX will run twice as often, with four trains per hour operating between 4:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. More importantly, the travel time will be cut down to just 23 minutes, with stops only at Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz before reaching the airport.
The improvements extend beyond Berlin itself. New direct regional connections will link the airport to several Brandenburg towns, including Lübben and Lübbenau in the Spreewald region to the south, Oranienburg to the north, and Eberswalde in the northeast. Additionally, Berlin’s urban rail system will expand its coverage: the S-Bahn line 85 will be extended to BER, creating another direct link for northern and northeastern parts of the city.
With these changes, the airport will become significantly more accessible, not only for Berliners but also for passengers traveling from the surrounding Brandenburg region.
