A 32-year-old woman in Berlin has been charged with negligent homicide following the death of a man struck by a falling flower pot, the Berlin public prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday. According to the charge, the woman had placed a clay pot weighing almost five kilograms on the outer edge of her second-floor balcony railing, leaving it unsecured. The pot fell onto the pavement below, striking a 61-year-old man on the head and fatally injuring him.
The incident took place on 5 April of this year, Easter Monday, at a residential building in the Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen. According to the prosecution, the weather service had issued a wind gust warning the day before. The accused had placed the clay pot outside the metal strut of the balcony railing. She has not commented on the allegations.
According to the public prosecutor's office, a wind gust caught the flower pot and blew it off the balcony. It fell onto the pavement in front of the residential building, where it struck a 61-year-old resident of the building on the head, fatally injuring him. He died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.
The woman has been charged before the Tiergarten District Court. The court will first examine the case and then decide whether to open proceedings.
