A police officer has rescued a motorist who drove into the Neckar River in a dramatic operation near Bad Rappenau. The officer discovered the 50-year-old man floating in the water just minutes after an emergency call was received, according to police in Heilbronn on Friday.
The approximate location had been determined beforehand by tracking the man's mobile phone.
The driver accidentally drove his car into the Neckar on Thursday evening around 11:00 PM. According to police, he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Following the accident report, police patrols searched both banks of the river. During the search, one officer spotted the accident victim and rescued him from the water.
The rescued man was taken to hospital suffering from severe hypothermia. A blood sample was taken from the driver as part of the investigation. Police stated that the reason for driving into the Neckar was likely due to the driver's intoxication.
The 50-year-old's car initially remained missing. During the night, emergency services did discover a vehicle, but curiously, according to police, it turned out to be a car that had been reported stolen in 2019. The search for the accident vehicle was set to continue on Friday.
