Twenty people were injured in a tram accident in Berlin on Tuesday. According to the Berlin Fire Department, 17 suffered minor injuries and three were seriously injured. A total of twelve people were taken to hospitals.
According to the fire department, the tram derailed in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen district. Media reports indicate that it struck a pole while negotiating a curve. Photos showed that the tram’s side had been torn open. The fire department reported that 59 personnel were on the scene. Two lines were suspended for several hours due to the accident, and the Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) set up a rail replacement service.
BVG CEO Henrik Falk visited the accident site in the morning to assess the situation. “We are deeply affected by the images we saw here on site,” he said afterward. “Our thoughts are with the injured passengers.” He did not provide any details regarding the cause of the accident. However, he stated that it was “clear” that the BVG would actively contribute to the investigation.
