The Berlin police are stepping up operations against gun-related crime and illegal weapons possession with specially trained units. In recent months, there have been a “series of shootings in public spaces” in the German capital, Police President Barbara Slowik Meisel said on Friday. The “structures and individuals behind them” are known to the police, she added.
They are under close surveillance and are the subject of intensive investigations. “We are doing everything we can to prevent armed confrontations on our streets, dismantle networks, and arrest perpetrators,” said the police president.
Operational and investigative measures are being expanded. Slowik Meisel declined to provide details for tactical reasons but stated that up to 100 specially trained officers are involved. Their task is to “conduct targeted investigations, disrupt and prosecute criminal activities, and identify, prevent, or decisively end armed confrontations at an early stage.”
