A tear gas attack at IGS Brake school in Lower Saxony left 38 students injured on Monday afternoon, prompting a massive emergency response and full school evacuation. Police are investigating the incident as dangerous bodily harm while searching for witnesses who may have information about the unknown perpetrators.
The incident occurred Monday midday when unknown individuals sprayed an irritant gas inside the IGS Brake school building. Firefighters, paramedics, and police deployed numerous personnel in a large-scale emergency operation to respond to the crisis.
"Based on current information, the spraying of the irritant may have led to the large-scale response,” stated a press release issued Monday afternoon by the Delmenhorst/Oldenburg-Land/Wesermarsch Police Department.
The entire school was evacuated as a precautionary measure, and classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day. Initially, police reported that 20 students had been injured after inhaling the tear gas. However, the actual number was later confirmed to be 38 students.
The young victims complained of irritated airways and eyes following exposure to the tear gas. Some students were treated on-site by medical personnel, while others sought treatment at local hospitals.
The specific circumstances and motives behind the attack remain unclear as police continue their investigation into dangerous bodily harm. However, authorities believe a targeted attack on a specific individual is unlikely, as no one appears to have been directly sprayed.
The Delmenhorst Police are actively seeking witnesses who may have information about the incident or the perpetrators. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact local authorities.
