The weather situation in Germany has largely calmed down after storm “Elli” passed through, but it remains wintery. According to its own information on Sunday, the German Weather Service continued to expect light snowfall across much of the country, which was expected to turn into freezing rain from the west, with a corresponding risk of severe weather and black ice. On Monday, snowfall and freezing rain were expected to shift to eastern Germany.
Over the weekend, police across Germany recorded numerous accidents on slippery and snow-covered roads, with snow removal services in operation in many places. In most cases, however, the injuries were minor and the damage to vehicles was limited to bodywork. There were also a few serious accidents. Near Korbach in Hesse on Saturday, a 27-year-old man skidded on the slippery road and collided with an oncoming car. He died, and the driver of the oncoming car was injured.
“Elli” hit Germany on Friday, causing massive disruption with storms and heavy snowfall in some areas. Rail traffic in northern Germany was severely disrupted. Authorities and transport companies urged people to stay at home if possible. Severe weather warnings were in place, and schools were closed in several states.
