The service workers' union Verdi has called on TikTok employees in Berlin to stage another warning strike on Monday. The industrial action will take place parallel to a court hearing, and a rally is also planned in front of the Berlin Labor Court, Verdi said.
The company is attempting to "establish facts" in the conflict over planned layoffs by filing legal proceedings against the works council. The conflict stems from TikTok's plan to have content moderation carried out by artificial intelligence (AI) or outsourced to third-party providers.
The affected employees, who previously trained the AI systems, are now facing dismissals. The union is demanding severance payments equivalent to three years' salary and an extension of the notice period by twelve months.
"After the colleagues trained the artificial intelligence, TikTok doesn't seem to be able to get rid of them fast enough," explained Kathlen Eggerling of Verdi. "Against this backdrop, we are increasing the pressure for a fair agreement with this day of strike. TikTok must finally take responsibility."
Verdi also accuses TikTok of internally disseminating false information about German strike law. Management claimed that the unannounced participation in Wednesday's warning strike violated legal obligations, the union stated. It sees this as an attempt at intimidation.
