U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has announced a significant workforce expansion at its Grünheide facility near Berlin. The company plans to scale up battery cell production at the German site to 18 gigawatt-hours annually, a company spokesperson stated on Wednesday. "Overall, the personnel requirement in the battery cell production area amounts to more than 1,500 employees."
Tesla had announced at the end of 2025 that it intended to produce battery cells at Grünheide with a capacity of eight gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year. The company has now announced additional investments totaling just under $250 million (€213.6 million) to increase capacity to 18 GWh. This expansion "will be accompanied by further significant workforce requirements," the spokesperson explained.
In April, Tesla had already announced plans to hire 1,000 new employees to ramp up production in response to higher demand for its vehicles. At that time, according to company information, 10,700 people were working at the Tesla factory in Grünheide.
