US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has announced plans to create a thousand additional jobs at its plant in Grünheide, Brandenburg. The company stated on Thursday that production will be "increased again" from October, reaching a target of 7,500 vehicles per week, a 20 percent rise from current output.
The expansion will proceed in two phases. Starting in July, production will first climb to 6,200 vehicles per week, for which Tesla said it has already begun hiring a thousand new employees.
When factoring in recruitment for the battery cell production ramp-up, the scope of the hiring push becomes considerably larger. "Together with the hiring of 1,500 employees for the battery cell manufacturing ramp-up, we are talking about 3,500 additional jobs being created in the short and medium term in vehicle and battery manufacturing at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg," Tesla stated.
Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) welcomed the announcement, describing Tesla in Brandenburg as a "success story." He added that the state government would continue to support the company in order to "ensure optimal conditions for sustainable growth." More than 11,000 people currently work at the Grünheide facility, which was opened by CEO Elon Musk approximately four years ago.
