One day before the signing of the coalition agreement between the CDU/CSU and SPD, the names of several possible SPD ministers have been leaked. The outgoing Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Europe, Carsten Schneider (SPD), is earmarked as Environment Minister, reported the portal “Table.Briefings” on Sunday, citing party circles. The deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group, Verena Hubertz, is to become construction minister. According to the news magazine “Politico”, Rhineland-Palatinate Education Minister Stefanie Hubig will become the new Federal Minister of Justice, while SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch will take over as parliamentary group leader.
Schneider had already announced in April that he would not continue in his position as Commissioner for Eastern Germany. 37-year-old Hubertz has been a member of the Bundestag since 2021 and would succeed SPD Minister Klara Geywitz in the construction portfolio. She had also been mooted as a possible environment minister.
It is considered certain that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will retain his post - Development Minister Svenja Schulze (both SPD) could also remain in office. Former Bundestag President Bärbel Bas is being discussed as Minister for Labor and Social Affairs. She would replace her party colleague Hubertus Heil (SPD), who had already announced that he would not be part of the new federal government.
According to "Politico", the SPD parliamentary group chair in the Bundestag is to be taken over by the party's current Secretary General, Miersch. The three factions within the parliamentary group have agreed on the appointment, the news magazine reported, citing parliamentary group circles.
SPD politician Reem Alabali-Radovan is earmarked as Development Minister, the news magazine “Politico” reported late on Sunday evening, citing party circles. According to the report, SPD co-leader Saskia Esken will not be part of the new federal government. Her co-party leader Lars Klingbeil informed her of this on Sunday, reported “Politico”. There had recently been speculation about the 63-year-old's ambitions for a job in the cabinet - for example as head of the development department.
According to the report, Nathalie Pawlik is to take over the post of Integration Commissioner. She was previously a member of the Bundestag and Federal Commissioner for Ethnic German Resettlers and National Minorities.
The SPD will present its ministerial line-up on Monday. In the morning, the party leadership will first inform the presidium and executive committee about the personnel decisions, and at 11.30 a.m. the new ministers will then present themselves to the public at a photo opportunity. So far, it was only known that party leader Lars Klingbeil will become Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister. In the coalition with the CDU/CSU, the SPD is entitled to six further ministerial posts.
The future coalition parties CDU, SPD and CSU plan to formally sign their coalition agreement at 12.00 noon.
