Fireworks such as New Year’s Eve rockets and firecrackers will go on sale in Germany starting Monday. Supermarkets and discount retailers are permitted to sell category F2 fireworks only during the final three days when stores are allowed to operate before the end of the year, this year beginning on December 29. The use of these fireworks is restricted to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

But what exactly is Category F2 Fireworks? These are standard New Year’s Eve fireworks, like rockets and large firecrackers designed for outdoor use in contained areas, that are only permitted for sale to adults and can only be used on December 31st and January 1st.

The upcoming sales period is expected to generate strong business for the industry. According to the Association of the Pyrotechnic Industry, the sector recorded a record turnover of around 197 million euros during the 2024/2025 New Year period. Data from the Federal Statistical Office also shows that significantly more fireworks were imported this year compared with the previous year.

Despite the economic outlook, private fireworks continue to face criticism. Environmental groups, as well as representatives from the police and the medical profession, have voiced opposition to allowing private individuals to use fireworks, citing ongoing concerns related to safety, health, and environmental impact.
