India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate After Kashmir Attack, Drone Strikes, and Misinformation Surge
Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir, intensifying military operations, misinformation campaigns, and civilian disruptions across the region. The escalation has drawn global attention amid fears of a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Deadly Kashmir Attack Sparks Military Retaliation
The conflict reignited after a deadly terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. India blames Pakistan-backed militants for the assault, while Pakistan has denied any involvement. In response, the Indian military conducted precision strikes on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure across the border. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that the strikes were defensive in nature, stating, “Our intention has not been to escalate matters. We are only responding to the original escalation.”
Pakistan Retaliates with Drone and Missile Strikes
On May 8 and 9, Pakistan launched retaliatory attacks using drones and missiles, striking multiple strategic and military sites in Northern and Western India, including Jammu, Amritsar, Pathankot, Srinagar, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, and more. In Jammu, Indian air defenses successfully intercepted several drones targeting the airport, averting significant damage.
Pakistan’s military claimed to have downed 28 Indian drones and accused India of attacking an air defense system in Lahore. The Indian Armed Forces rejected these claims, reiterating that their strikes were aimed at counter-terrorism targets and were not part of a broader military escalation.
Blackouts, Airport Closures, and School Shutdowns
The rising hostilities have caused severe disruptions. Widespread power outages were reported across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Over 24 airports near the India-Pakistan border have been temporarily shut down due to security concerns. Schools across several border districts remain closed indefinitely to protect students from potential threats.
India Fights Misinformation Surge from Pakistan
In a critical development, India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory highlighting a spike in disinformation campaigns allegedly driven by Pakistan-linked social media accounts. The ministry urged citizens and media outlets to rely only on verified government updates.
Additionally, the PIB Fact Check Unit identified and debunked multiple fake claims circulating online. These included fabricated reports of Indian military losses and misleading information about ongoing operations, intended to spread panic and fuel instability.
Global Reactions and Calls for De-escalation
U.S. Vice President Vance commented on the crisis, saying, “Not going to get involved in a war that’s fundamentally none of our business,” suggesting a likely non-interventionist stance from Washington. Meanwhile, international leaders have issued urgent appeals for both sides to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue.
Despite the intensifying conflict, senior Indian defense officials reiterated a commitment to avoid further escalation. “Indian Armed Forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is respected by the Pakistan military,” said a senior officer.
As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to mount, the situation remains highly volatile. With military operations, information warfare, and regional infrastructure disruptions all in play, the path forward remains uncertain. However, international pressure for peace and responsible diplomacy may help pave the way for de-escalation and future dialogue.
