According to a survey by the industry association Bitkom, news-focused podcasts are the most popular among German listeners. More than three-quarters (77 percent) of the podcast listeners surveyed said they particularly enjoy podcasts covering current events, the association reported on Wednesday in Berlin. The study polled around 1,200 people aged 16 and older in May and June of this year.
Nearly half of the respondents (49 percent) said they listen to podcasts at least occasionally. Political content in general was preferred by 59 percent, business and finance topics by 57 percent, and economic themes by 56 percent. Half of the respondents (50 percent) said they listen to podcasts on music, while 47 percent reported an interest in technology and digital topics as well as health and medicine.
Sports and fitness content attracted 46 percent, and 43 percent followed podcasts on travel and vacations. Scientific topics and interview formats were each listened to by 42 percent of respondents. Podcasts focused on self-discovery and personal development were chosen by 38 percent, while 37 percent listened to educational content. Around one-third (31 percent) engaged with comedy podcasts, and 30 percent followed crime and legal-themed podcasts.
Approximately one-quarter (24 percent) preferred podcasts about personalities and celebrities, with the same proportion selecting family and children topics. Films and television, as well as arts and culture, attracted 18 percent each. Topics such as video and computer games drew nine percent of listeners, love and sexuality seven percent, and religion and spirituality were followed by only four percent.
