Fresh snowfall and freezing rain have once again led to accidents, traffic disruptions, and school closures, particularly in western and northwestern Germany. In numerous districts in Hesse and Lower Saxony, schools remained closed on Wednesday, as was the case in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Deutsche Bahn reported delays and train cancellations, including on routes between Berlin and Hanover as well as between Cologne and Frankfurt am Main. On Wednesday morning, the Deutscher Wetterdienst issued an official severe weather warning for icy conditions in Bremen and Lower Saxony. In other parts of Germany, snow also fell during the night leading into Wednesday, according to the weather service, especially in the northern and northeastern regions.
Since Tuesday afternoon, numerous accidents occurred on motorways in Hesse. According to local police, several trucks got stuck on an incline near the Wiesbaden motorway junction, bringing traffic to a complete standstill for many hours. No one was injured.
A serious accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon on a rural road near the Hessian city of Fulda. According to police, a truck slid onto the opposite lane in a downhill curve due to snow and collided with a delivery van. The 51-year-old driver of the van was so severely injured that he died at the scene.
