German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and other leading European politicians will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on his visit to Washington on Monday. They plan to discuss with US President Donald Trump after his summit with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska "the status of peace efforts, security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued support for Ukraine," Merz explained on Sunday on the online service X.
Also attending the meeting in Washington will be French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as announced by Paris, London, Rome, and Helsinki. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO President Mark Rutte also announced their participation in the Washington meeting.
Merz will "underline Germany's interest in a swift peace agreement in Ukraine" to Trump, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius explained in Berlin. The "maintenance of sanctions pressure" will also be discussed in Washington.
Zelensky will be in Brussels on Sunday afternoon and will participate in the video conference of European Ukraine supporters, von der Leyen explained on the online service X. The Ukrainian president plans to meet with US President Trump in Washington on Monday and discuss a possible end to the war in Ukraine. Trump and Putin met in Alaska on Friday.
