Left Party parliamentary leader Heidi Reichinnek has delivered a scathing assessment of the black-red coalition government after one year in power, accusing the administration of presiding over chaos and pursuing policies that harm ordinary citizens.
"A year of chaos, uncertainty, and openly fought disputes: that is the result whose consequences the people in this country have to deal with," Reichinnek told the newspapers of the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland for Tuesday editions. "No government has ever been so unpopular, and yet no one at the cabinet table seems to hear the warning signs."
Rather than changing course, Reichinnek argued, the government is intensifying its approach. "They are hollowing out the welfare state, taking an axe to health insurance and pensions, and dismantling workers' rights," she stated.
The Left Party leader directed particular criticism at the CDU/CSU, charging that the conservative bloc is attempting to address contemporary challenges with outdated solutions. Reichinnek accused the Union of trying to answer "today's problems with yesterday's solutions" while having "only the interests of their welathy friends in mind."
Turning to the SPD, Reichinnek said the Social Democrats are lying on the ground and are only trying to prevent parts of the Union from using the opportunity to make common cause with the AfD as quickly as possible.
The atmosphere within the governing coalition has grown increasingly strained due to disagreements over various reforms and legislative initiatives. These internal conflicts are compounded by Germany's weak economic performance and disappointing poll numbers for both coalition partners.
The Union now regularly trails the AfD in surveys. Meanwhile, the latest Forsa poll placed the SPD at just twelve percent, well behind the Greens and level with the Left Party itself.
