Germany is set to revolutionize high-speed rail travel with the approval of the first ICE L trains featuring step-free entry, Deutsche Bahn (DB) announced. The new trains are scheduled to enter passenger service from mid-December 2025, with the first four units operating between Berlin and Cologne.
The ICE L introduces step-free entry for the first time on a German high-speed train, allowing passengers to board effortlessly without steps or lifts. This improvement makes travel easier for passengers with wheelchairs, strollers, bicycles, or large luggage, setting a new standard for accessibility on long-distance trains.
The new ICE L trains feature a shorter carriage length and a modern interior design with homely materials. Daytime-dependent lighting control creates a pleasant sense of space, enhancing passenger comfort throughout the journey. These design upgrades were extensively tested to ensure a welcoming environment for all travelers.
The ICE L is equipped with mobile-permeable windows, allowing signals from mobile phones and tablets to pass directly into the train carriages. This technology significantly improves mobile reception, ensuring passengers can stay connected while traveling at high speeds.
DB conducted extensive tests with 1,600 volunteers to refine the ergonomics and comfort of the new seats. Each seat comes with a spacious folding table and a tablet or mobile phone holder, offering both convenience and comfort for business and leisure travelers alike.
The ICE L will be unveiled to the public in Berlin on October 17, 2025, before its gradual rollout in mid-December. Deutsche Bahn has confirmed that despite previous delays due to delivery issues at Talgo and testing procedures, the trains are ready to set a new benchmark in comfort, accessibility, and connectivity on Germany’s high-speed rail network.
The ICE L represents a significant leap forward in passenger comfort and accessibility, ensuring that Germany’s high-speed rail network continues to set global standards in innovation and service.
