Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) has announced that the average expenditure-covering supplemental contribution for statutory health insurance will be set at 2.9 percent as expected on Monday. “Our task is to jointly determine, within the so-called estimating committee alongside the health insurance funds and other experts, what the average expenditure-covering supplemental contribution is expected to be. And we will set and publish it at 2.9% this Monday,” Warken told the Rheinische Post on Monday.
However, the actual supplemental contribution will be set individually by each health insurance fund. This largely depends on the financial situation of the respective fund. “Because competition exists among the funds, each one has to assess how it manages its income and expenses. Some do this better than others, and that’s why there are different supplemental contributions,” she explained.
Warken had already indicated in mid-October that the supplemental contribution would likely remain at 2.9%. Previously, the federal cabinet passed a draft law intended to reduce the expenditures of statutory health insurance funds by 2 billion euros in 2026. Some health insurance funds have already indicated that their contributions could rise above 3% next year.
