Fuel prices in Germany have continued to rise due to the war in the Middle East, with diesel climbing well above two euros per litre on Thursday morning, the ADAC reported. Petrol also briefly crossed that threshold. "We often see a morning price peak at this time, and it has now broken through the two-euro mark for a litre of Super E10 for the first time in a long time," the motoring club said.
Petrol stood at 2.003 euros per litre. "That was a snapshot and quite close," the ADAC added. "During the course of the day, Super E10 will probably fall back below two euros on average, but further price increases in the coming days are to be feared if the situation in the Middle East does not ease." Diesel was at 2.086 euros per litre on Thursday morning. On Wednesday, the daily average price had stood at 2.005 euros for diesel, while petrol averaged 1.935 euros.
In February, the monthly average for diesel had still been 1.722 euros per litre, with petrol at 1.760 euros. The Iran war has caused crude oil prices to rise sharply. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Around one fifth of the world's oil production is transported through this route.
