A broad coalition of environmental advocacy groups has called for demonstrations on Saturday in Germany's metropolitan centers of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Köln, with all protests scheduled to begin at noon. Under the banner "Defend Renewable Energy," the organizers are demanding a decisive shift away from coal, oil, and natural gas.

The demonstrations represent a coordinated response to legislative proposals put forward by Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche of the CDU, whom activists accuse of attempting to obstruct the expansion of renewable energy through her policy initiatives.

Energy Security Concerns Drive Protest Movement

"Fossil fuels threaten our security," the demonstration organizers state in their call to action, pointing to escalating energy costs against the backdrop of the Iran conflict and Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. In contrast, they argue that expanding renewable energy sources provides protection against spiraling costs while permanently reducing electricity prices.

The coalition behind the protests includes prominent environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, WWF, Fridays for Future, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Germanwatch, and the Campact network.

Political Support From Opposition Parties

Politicians from the Green Party, the Left Party, and the SPD are scheduled to address attendees at the various rally locations, lending political weight to the environmental movement's demands for accelerated renewable energy deployment and the phasing out of fossil fuel dependency.
