As the Easter holiday season begins in ten German federal states, the ADAC has warned of significant traffic congestion over the coming weekend. The risk of traffic jams is expected to rise sharply, the automobile club said on Monday in Munich.
The holidays are starting in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein. Meanwhile, Bremen and Lower Saxony are already on holiday.
Heavy congestion is expected particularly on Friday afternoon, when commuter traffic and holiday travel overlap. Routes to and from coastal regions, the Alps, and low mountain ranges are likely to be especially affected. Traffic conditions are expected to ease over the course of Saturday, while Sunday will likely be quieter.
Additional strain is expected from an increasing number of construction sites, creating further bottlenecks on key routes. Traffic congestion is also anticipated on major travel routes to holiday destinations in Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
