Germany's leading automobile club ADAC has issued warnings about numerous traffic jams expected on highways during the Easter holidays. Significantly increased traffic volume is anticipated, the club announced on Monday. Twelve federal states are already on vacation, with Saxony, Thuringia, and Saarland now joining them. Routes to and from coastal areas as well as to winter sports regions in the Alps are expected to be particularly affected by congestion.
An increase in traffic can be expected as early as Wednesday, as many travelers aim to avoid the main travel day. Roads could become especially congested on Thursday afternoon and evening. The situation is expected to ease on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.
On Easter Monday, return traffic will lead to traffic jams in the afternoon and evening. The traffic situation will remain tense in several northern German states in the days following Easter, as school holidays end in multiple regions.
Delays must also be expected on major travel routes in Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. At borders with Germany, isolated waiting times may occur due to border controls.
