As Germany prepares for record rail upgrades, Deutsche Bahn is setting a 60% punctuality target for long-distance travel. Infrastructure chief Philipp Nagl argues that completed projects are already improving reliability. He aims to build on those gains in 2026, though he notes that network-wide progress requires time and extensive work.

Despite a record number of construction sites planned, Deutsche Bahn aims to significantly improve its long-distance punctuality this year. The share of on-time trains should rise to 60%, Philipp Nagl, head of the infrastructure division DB Infrago, told Bild am Sonntag. Recently, punctuality has often hovered around 50%.

“Passengers can feel improvements everywhere we have carried out extensive work. My goal is that we do not fall below a punctuality rate of 60% this year,” Nagl said. In 2026, the priority will be “to stabilize punctuality and lay the foundation for noticeable improvements in the years ahead,” he added. However, he acknowledged, “That won’t happen overnight on the rail network.”

Next year, tracks, rails, overhead lines and stations across Germany are set to be renewed. DB Infrago expects around 28,000 construction sites. Last year, the company reported roughly 26,000 construction sites and investment spending of 19 billion euros.
