Germany’s national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, is reducing long-distance services in parts of northern Germany due to winter weather and is advising passengers to postpone their journeys. “All passengers who purchased a ticket by January 7, 2026, for travel between January 8 and January 10, 2026, and who wish to postpone their trip due to winter weather conditions, may use their ticket at a later date,” the company said on Wednesday.
According to Deutsche Bahn, “noticeable disruptions to rail services are expected in the coming days, particularly in the north and northeast of Germany.” Long-distance restrictions include routes to Kiel, Rostock and Copenhagen. In addition, maximum speeds for ICE trains will be reduced on the high-speed lines Berlin–Wolfsburg, Hanover–Würzburg and Cologne–Rhine/Main to prevent damage, the company said. Travel times could increase by up to 30 minutes as a result.
Weather-related restrictions may also affect regional rail services in the coming days, according to the statement. Passengers who choose to postpone their journey can use their long-distance ticket at a later time. “Train-specific ticket restrictions have been lifted,” Deutsche Bahn said, adding that seat reservations can be cancelled free of charge.
