Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced a special summer offer for families looking to travel during the school holidays across all German states. From late June through mid-September, families can travel round-trip on long-distance trains for a flat rate of 99.99 euros, the railway company announced on Tuesday. Seat reservations are included in the price. The offer will be available for booking starting in mid-June.
DB CEO Evelyn Palla emphasized the importance of reliable travel options during challenging economic conditions. "Family summer vacations must not fall through," Palla stated. "Germany needs stability and security now. Nobody knows how fuel and flight prices will develop. We are making a special offer to all families who are looking uncertainly at the approaching summer holidays in the current crisis."
To illustrate the value proposition, Deutsche Bahn provided a comparison showing that driving a family car from Hamburg to Munich currently costs over €200 in fuel alone. This is more than double the price of the "holiday family flat rate" ticket, according to the railway operator's calculations.
The family ticket is valid for up to five travelers on a single booking. The company plans to release additional details about the offer in June. Under Deutsche Bahn's standard fare structure, children under six years old always travel free of charge. Children up to and including 14 years old can travel free on long-distance trains when accompanied by someone at least 15 years old.
This year, summer holidays across Germany begin on a staggered schedule. The first states to break for summer are Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland on June 29, with the last state beginning holidays on August 3. The holiday period ends no later than September 14 in Bavaria.
