A car drove into a group of people in the center of Stuttgart on Friday - several people were injured, one woman later died in hospital. “At around 5.50 p.m., a black G-Class Mercedes drove into a group of people at Olgaeck in Stuttgart Mitte,” a spokeswoman for the Stuttgart police told the AFP news agency. "There are several casualties, including serious injuries. The driver has been arrested." A seriously injured 46-year-old woman later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
The police assumed it was a “tragic traffic accident”, as they announced in the evening on the online service X. “There are currently no indications of an attack or a deliberate act.”
The Stuttgart fire department explained in the online service X that there were several casualties, including three seriously injured people. The seriously injured were taken to Stuttgart hospitals. “Several people with minor injuries are still being treated at the scene”, it continued. The public prosecutor's office and police later announced that one seriously injured person succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
The Stuttgart police explained at X: "After a car injured several people at Olgaeck, our colleagues arrested the driver. The investigation into the circumstances is ongoing."
The incident initially brought back memories of recent attacks involving cars in Germany. Shortly before Christmas, a critic of Islam from Saudi Arabia crashed into the Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing six people. Almost 300 people were injured. In Munich in February, a 24-year-old Afghan man drove his car into the end of a demonstration. Two people were killed and numerous others injured. Investigators assumed it was an Islamist attack.
