A large-scale police operation is unfolding in Regensburg, Bavaria, after a knife attack inside a bank branch left one person critically injured. Authorities say the incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. at a bank in the Rennweg area of the Prüfening district, in the western part of the city.
The severely wounded victim has since been removed from the premises and is receiving emergency medical treatment at a hospital, a police spokeswoman confirmed. The alleged attacker, believed to be a man armed with a knife, remains inside the bank building. Investigators say it is still unclear whether other individuals are being held against their will, as officers have not yet been able to pinpoint the suspect's exact location within the structure.
Officials say there are indications that at least one additional person may still be inside the branch with the suspect, raising the possibility of a hostage situation, though this has not been officially confirmed. According to regional broadcaster reports, police currently have no contact with the alleged perpetrator and cannot confirm whether he is carrying weapons besides the knife.
Police have deployed substantial resources to the scene, including specialized tactical units and a helicopter circling above the area. The surrounding streets have been sealed off, with heavily armed officers stationed nearby. Residents have been urged to avoid the vicinity of the bank while the operation continues. Investigators say the suspect's motive is not yet known, and no demands have been made so far.
