Are you aware that many European airlines may be charging you unfair fees for carry-on luggage? If you’re planning to fly soon, it’s crucial to understand your rights to avoid unexpected baggage costs that can quickly add up.
The German Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) has recently taken legal action against several airlines, including EasyJet, WizzAir, and Vueling Airlines, accusing them of charging improper carry-on baggage fees. Additionally, vzbv has issued official warnings to seven airlines, including Ryanair, for misleading customers by advertising fares that exclude proper carry-on luggage.
According to vzbv board member Ramona Pop, some airlines lure customers with seemingly low fares that only cover a tiny “mini-bag,” while charging extra for standard-sized carry-on luggage. This practice can mislead travelers and violate consumer protection laws.
Importantly, a 2014 ruling by the European Court of Justice clearly states that carrying hand luggage is an essential part of air travel - not an optional add-on. This means airlines should include reasonable-sized carry-on bags in the ticket price without extra charges, provided the bag meets weight and size safety regulations.
Millions of passengers across Europe are affected each year by confusing and costly baggage rules. To combat this, vzbv has issued warnings and filed lawsuits against multiple airlines. These legal actions are ongoing in German courts, putting pressure on airlines to be more transparent and fair.
What does this mean for you? Before booking your flight, always check the airline’s carry-on baggage policy carefully. Know that you are entitled to bring a standard carry-on without hidden fees. Consumer groups are pushing the EU to set clear rules to protect passengers from surprise costs.
Travel smart, avoid unnecessary fees, and know your rights when flying in Europe!
