Lufthansa has cancelled a series of flights across the Middle East region following the military strikes on Iran. The German airline announced on Saturday that all flights to Tel Aviv in Israel, Tehran in Iran, Beirut in Lebanon, Amman in Jordan, and Erbil in Iraq would be suspended until March 7. The airspaces of these countries will not be used during this period. Affected passengers can rebook free of charge or receive a full refund.
In addition to the broader regional cancellations, all Lufthansa flights to and from Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been cancelled through Sunday. The airline cited the "current situation" in the region as the reason for its decision. The company said it is continuing to monitor the situation closely and is in close contact with local authorities. The safety of passengers and crews, it added, "always has the highest priority."
The flight cancellations follow the military strikes launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on Saturday morning. Explosions were reported in Tehran and several other Iranian cities. Loud explosions were also heard in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Lufthansa is not alone in its response to the escalating situation. Air France cancelled all its flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut on Saturday. Swiss Airlines suspended all connections to Tel Aviv through March 7. Turkish Airlines also announced it is temporarily halting flights to the capitals of the affected countries in the region.
