A passenger plane carrying 185 people encountered severe turbulence during a storm over Bavaria on Wednesday evening. Due to several injuries, the plane made a so-called emergency landing at Memmingen Airport, police in the Bavarian city announced overnight. Nine people were injured, and three were taken to the local hospital.
The Ryanair jet was reportedly carrying 179 passengers and six crew members on a flight to Milan, and the landing itself was "safe and without incident." Among the injured, according to police, was a two-year-old child with bruises. One woman suffered a head laceration, another complained of back pain.
The emergency services examined all passengers and crew members as a precautionary measure; of the nine injured, six only required outpatient treatment.
A severe thunderstorm situation prevailed across much of southern Germany on Wednesday evening. The weather service warned of storms, large hail, and heavy rain. According to police, the weather made it impossible for the plane to land in Munich, so the pilot diverted to Memmingen Airport, located to the west.
The responsible supervisory authority prohibited the onward flight. According to officials, the airline therefore organized buses to transport the passengers to Milan. According to media reports, the jet arrived from Berlin.
