Following protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policies, the US state of Texas has announced the deployment of the National Guard. "The Texas National Guard will be deployed to various locations throughout the state to maintain peace and order," Republican Governor Greg Abbott wrote on the online service X on Tuesday evening (local time). Peaceful protest is legal, but "harming persons or property is illegal and will result in arrest."
Trump's party colleague emphasized that the Texas National Guard would "use every tool and strategy to help the police maintain order." Following massive protests in the state of California, Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles against the wishes of the state's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom. On Tuesday, Mayor Karen Bass imposed a nighttime curfew on downtown Los Angeles.
Police in the West Coast metropolis announced on Tuesday evening that they had arrested numerous people. "Several groups continue to gather and mass arrests are underway," the police wrote on the online service X. They did not provide an exact number.
The protests, some of which were violent, were triggered by the increased crackdown on migrants by the immigration authorities (ICE). Protests also took place in other US cities against the actions of masked and armed ICE officers, who sometimes forcibly drag migrants into cars to deport them.
