A suspected arson attack on a Deutsche Bahn signal box near Düsseldorf caused major disruptions to rail traffic on Thursday. The Düsseldorf police confirmed that the State Security Service has taken over the investigation, with inquiries proceeding in all directions. Fortunately, the fire resulted in only material damage and no injuries.
Deutsche Bahn attributed the incident to vandalism, which led to cancellations, diversions, and delays of up to 30 minutes. The disruption affected several key routes, including ICE trains running between Berlin and Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Aachen. Additionally, ICE, IC, and RJ trains traveling between northern Germany, the Ruhr region, and southern Germany experienced delays.
International and long-distance routes were also impacted, with ICE trains between Amsterdam and Frankfurt am Main, Dortmund and Vienna, as well as IC services between East Frisia and Cologne, facing interruptions. Passengers were advised to check for updates and expect delays as repairs and investigations continue.
