The price of a cup of Glühwein at Christmas markets has risen again this year: on average, it costs €4.54 without deposit, which is seven per cent more than last year, according to figures released on Tuesday by Coupons.de. Compared to 2023, the increase was as much as 15 per cent. Glühwein is particularly expensive in large cities and at Christmas markets popular with tourists.
The voucher provider Coupons.de calculated the prices for a cup of red mulled wine without a deposit. According to their findings, Glühwein is cheapest in Zwönitz and Annaberg-Buchholz in the Ore Mountains, at €3.00 or €3.50.
At the Berlin Christmas market in Westend, at Cologne Cathedral, at Santa Pauli in Hamburg's nightlife district and in front of Westfield in Hamburg's Hafen City, a cup of Glühwein costs £5.00, while at the Christmas market at the Gedächtniskirche in Berlin, it can cost as much as £7.50
Coupons.de surveyed city marketing departments, city tourism associations, Christmas market organisers and stall operators by telephone and email. Market and stall operators cited higher energy prices, higher stall fees and higher personnel costs as the reasons for the price increases.
