Rescue workers have recovered the body of a 25-year-old Romanian woman from the rubble of a collapsed residential building in Görlitz . Police in the Saxon city confirmed the discovery early on Thursday morning. The body of the woman, who had been missing since the building collapsed on Monday, was found at around 10:30 pm on Wednesday. A paramedic on site confirmed her death, after which her remains were recovered from the debris.
Following the recovery, search operations were briefly suspended before resuming at full capacity. A search-and-rescue dog was also redeployed as part of the ongoing efforts. In addition to the 25-year-old, two other people remain unaccounted for. According to the authorities, they are a 26-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man.
The multi-family residential building in the centre of Görlitz collapsed on Monday, with a gas explosion believed to be the likely cause. Since then, rescue teams have been working through the wreckage, at times sifting through the debris by hand, in a search for the three missing individuals.
In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, ten neighbouring buildings were evacuated. By Tuesday, residents of some of those properties were allowed to return to their homes. On Wednesday, authorities permitted affected residents from the buildings still under restricted access to briefly enter their apartments, accompanied by emergency personnel, to collect personal belongings, police confirmed.
According to city officials, structural reinforcement work on the side wall of an adjacent building was also still underway.
