A four-year-old girl has been killed by a dog in Saxony-Anhalt. According to police and the public prosecutor's office in Dessau-Roßlau, the child was playing with the family's dog in an apartment on Wednesday when the animal attacked her. Several people who were present attempted to separate the dog from the girl.
The four-year-old suffered extremely severe injuries. A short time later, an emergency doctor arriving at the scene was only able to confirm that the girl had died. According to police and prosecutors, an investigation for negligent homicide has been opened to clarify the circumstances of the incident. It is currently directed against the girl's 32-year-old mother and a 30-year-old acquaintance.
According to authorities, the tragedy took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Drosa district of the municipality of Osternienburger Land, in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district. According to investigators, the dog was apparently an American Staffordshire Terrier.
In Germany, this breed is classified as a so-called "Kampfhund," or fighting dog, and in most German states, ownership is subject to specific legal requirements. The dog was taken to an animal shelter with the assistance of a veterinarian.
