Germany’s travel company Flix is set to increase competition for Deutsche Bahn (DB) with ambitious plans for its train services. From 2028, Flixtrain will establish a “high-frequency network” connecting all major cities across Germany, the company announced on Friday. To achieve this, it has placed an order for 65 high-speed trains from the Spanish manufacturer Talgo.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) expressed his support, saying he welcomed any competition on the railways. Flix had previously announced the order for the 65 Talgo trains, initially intended for cross-border services in Europe. Now, the company confirmed that all 65 trains will operate within Germany.

In the two years leading up to the arrival of the first new Talgo trains, Flixtrain also plans to double its domestic service offering using additional modernized carriages. According to the company, this expansion will ensure a better travel experience and denser timetables. The upgraded carriages will feature increased legroom and air conditioning.

Currently, 15 Flixtrain services operate in Germany, connecting four major cities, Flix CEO André Schwämmlein explained. Schwämmlein has previously emphasized that the company aims to keep its fares lower than Deutsche Bahn’s, stating in Süddeutsche Zeitung: “We will always remain cheaper than Deutsche Bahn.”

Flixtrain’s new trains will not include a first-class section or onboard restaurant; instead, snack vending machines will be available. Passengers requiring larger luggage space or a preferred seat, such as by the window, will need to pay extra. The new Talgo trains will also feature barrier-free entry, high-speed Wi-Fi, and additional amenities designed to significantly enhance passenger comfort.
