Ticket prices for most flights rose significantly in the first half of 2026. International flights from Germany became 8.5 percent more expensive compared with the same period last year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Monday. Among economy-class fares for international flights, the sharpest increases were on routes to Central America, up 12.5 percent. Tickets to Africa, however, became 12.0 percent cheaper.
Flights to European destinations abroad cost around 11.5 percent more than in the first six months of the previous year, the Federal Statistical Office added. Travelers paid 4.9 percent more for tickets to Australia and Asia, while long-haul flights to North America became 3.7 percent more expensive. Prices for flights to South America rose by only 0.3 percent. Domestic flights within Germany also became pricier, with passengers paying 9.5 percent more.
Holidaymakers also had to pay more for package holidays abroad, according to the statistics, 3.0 percent more on average. The steepest increases were recorded for trips to Egypt, up 5.2 percent, followed by package holidays to the Canary Islands (up 4.6 percent) and trips to the Balearic Islands, which rose in price by 3.6 percent.
Package holidays to Turkey cost 1.3 percent more. For holidays in Greece, package travelers paid almost the same prices as the previous year. Package holidays within Germany became more expensive by a similar margin to trips abroad, rising by 2.8 percent.
The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the Iran war triggered a sharp rise in the price of kerosene. Airlines on every continent raised their fares and suspended flights for safety or profitability reasons.
