What is Euro-Office?

Euro-Office is a free, open-source, cloud-based office suite built and operated entirely by European companies. Designed to give European users a sovereign alternative to American platforms, it will be publicly available from June 9, 2026.

What Euro-Office offers

The platform is built with full compatibility with Microsoft Office formats as a central priority. Users can create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in a familiar environment, without needing to relearn workflows or convert files. Beyond Microsoft compatibility, Euro-Office is also designed to work with formats used by LibreOffice and other widely-used programs, broadening its appeal to users coming from different office environments.

For its first stable release, the development team has focused on stability, security features, and seamless integration with existing platforms used by the founding partners. Desktop and mobile applications are planned for later development stages.

Who is behind Euro-Office?

A broad alliance of European technology companies and organisations is preparing to launch Euro-Office on June 9, 2026, an open-source, cloud-based office suite designed to offer a fully European alternative to the market dominance of Microsoft 365 and Google Docs. The platform will be published on GitHub and made available to the public at no cost, with ambitions to serve governments, schools, and enterprises across the continent.

The project is a joint effort by several well-known European companies and organisations, each bringing a distinct area of expertise to the initiative. The founding partners include IONOS, Nextcloud, OpenProject, OpenXchange, XWiki, and Tuta.

Together, the group aims to create a modern office platform that can realistically compete with the established American cloud offerings, and make the transition as smooth as possible for users already locked into those ecosystems.

Integration into existing platforms from day one

The initial release will not just exist as a standalone tool, it will be built directly into the services of the partner organisations. Nextcloud plans to bundle Euro-Office within its Workspace offering, while IONOS customers using Managed Nextcloud will be able to install it immediately after launch.

Integrations with further providers are expected to follow over the coming months, with the software also designed to connect with file management systems, wiki platforms, and project management tools.

Digital sovereignty as the driving force

The initiative is framed squarely around the concept of European digital autonomy. According to its founders, Euro-Office will operate entirely under European control, an increasingly important consideration for public institutions and enterprises seeking to reduce their reliance on American cloud infrastructure.

IONOS CEO Achim Weiß has pointed to recent geopolitical developments as context for the project's urgency, noting that Europe needs a reliable, easy-to-use office solution that is fully compatible with Microsoft and entirely within European control. The case for a European alternative, he suggests, has never been clearer.

Part of a broader European shift away from American software

Euro-Office is not emerging in isolation. It is part of a wider pattern of European governments and institutions reassessing their dependence on US technology providers. In April 2026, the French government announced plans to move toward Linux as its operating system of choice, stepping back from Windows. Additionally, French public authorities are working toward replacing Microsoft Teams with the domestic platform Visio by 2027.

Against this backdrop, Euro-Office arrives at a moment of real appetite for alternatives. For public sector bodies and enterprises subject to European data regulations, a fully European-controlled, open-source office suite could represent a meaningful shift, and potentially apply genuine pressure on Microsoft's entrenched position across the continent.

The first version of Euro-Office will be available via GitHub from June 9, 2026, free of charge and open to all.
