India and Pakistan have agreed to a complete and immediate ceasefire following several days of intense cross-border violence. The agreement came into effect at 5:00 PM IST on May 10, 2025, and was reached through direct military-to-military communication, initiated by a call from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) earlier in the day.

Both sides have issued instructions to their respective forces to ensure adherence to the ceasefire and implement the agreement on the ground. As part of the understanding, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both sides are scheduled to hold further talks on May 12 at 1200 hrs IST to review the situation

Indian officials clarified that the decision was mutually agreed upon without third-party involvement, following claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington had brokered the deal. India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting emphasized that no talks on other issues were scheduled, and the ceasefire was limited to halting hostilities on land, in the air, and at sea.

“Pakistan and India have agreed on an immediate ceasefire,” Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishak Dar stated in the online service X. Pakistan has “always been committed to peace and security in the region without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Dar added.

Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who has been actively engaged in discussions with global leaders since April 22nd, reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism on X.

The fighting was touched off by an attack on the Indian-run side of Kashmir that killed 26 tourists, mostly Hindu men, which Delhi blamed on Islamabad, leading to retaliatory strikes, drone incursions, and artillery exchanges that killed over 60 civilians on both sides.
