BundID is Germany’s digital identification system that allows citizens to securely access online services provided by federal, state, and local authorities. The system is integrated with nearly 1,800 platforms and portals, enabling users to complete a variety of administrative tasks online.
Citizens can use BundID to apply for child benefits (Elterngeld), student financial aid (BAföG), register their residence, or handle vehicle registration, among other services. As part of Germany’s ongoing digitalization of public administration, BundID accounts are issued to citizens to provide a verified and unified way to access online government services.
According to the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs, the number of active BundID accounts decreased from nearly 5.3 million at the end of 2024 to approximately 4.9 million as of August 11, 2025. The decline is due to the automatic deletion of accounts that had been inactive for 24 months, in line with data protection regulations. Many of the deleted accounts were originally created by students and pupils in 2023 to receive a one-time €200 energy price compensation.
Despite the temporary decline, BundID usage has significantly increased. Since May 2025, the number of accounts has been growing by an average of 154,000 per month, and monthly logins have doubled, rising from around one million to two million.
The ministry has not provided detailed information on which specific services are most frequently accessed via BundID, noting that such statistics are currently unavailable.
BundID continues to play a central role in Germany’s digital transformation, offering citizens a secure and efficient way to manage their interactions with government services online.
